Cafe Estelle

Cafe Estelle - 444 N. 4th Street

Eggs Benny

This benny here reminds me a joke someone once told me, it went something like this. "Apparently smaller cars, cell phones, and laptop computers are really in style right now. Maybe someday smaller penises will be in style...and YOU my friend, will be a legend". Well apparently smaller bennys are in style now too, and I couldn't be more disappointed. I grasp (but do not enjoy) that whole smaller portions trend but c'mon! This is not T.G.I. Fridays people, this is BRUNCH we're talking about. All things aside, this was an outstanding benny. Thinly sliced ham, perfects eggs and hollandaise sauce on a toasty little biscuit. Home fries were also excellent. You should also be aware that Cafe Estelle is a pour-your-own coffee place with 4 different blends to chose from. You also receive a cup to-go after paying. We dig this about you Estelle. Awesome benny, but I left hungry.

This was a solid 4-egg benny but Im knocking it down to 3.5 due to size.

Eggs Francis

Similar story with the Eggs Francis. Great benny, but a bit on the small side. Shrimp, artichokes, bernaise sauce, all on top of an English Muffin fit for a baby. The benny kids meal, the White Castle equivalent of the benny, etc. Don't get it twisted, just because I could have easily eaten 2 more of these doesn't mean that the taste was lacking. A good amount of shrimp/artichokes despite the surface area of the English Muffin!

I highly recommend Cafe Estelle.

The Belgian Cafe

The Belgian Cafe - 21st and Green

I admire any benny that deviates from the norm. In the case of The Belgian Cafe, substituting a Liege waffle for an english muffin seemed ballsy when I first read about it. The waffle, combined with Lancaster ham, poached eggs, and some asparagus made for a surprisingly average benny. Did I expect more out of it? Probably. Was it bad? No. Would I order it again? Probably not.

While I realize that the focus of this blog is on the benny itself, I'd like to stress the importance of potatoes during brunch. Hash browns, home fries, frites, latke... these things matter!
